Roofing calculators

Work out the pitch of a roof, then the tiles and battens to cover it.

Planning a roof: the order to work in

  1. Find the pitch. The roof pitch calculator converts between degrees, percent and rise per 12 inches, and gives the rafter length.
  2. Check the covering. Every tile, slate and sheet has a minimum pitch and a batten gauge from its maker. Get them from the data sheet before you choose.
  3. Count the tiles. Use the roof tiles calculator with the gauge and cover width, and add spare for cuts.

These calculators suit simple roofs. Hips, valleys, dormers and chimneys need extra tiles and cutting, so ask a merchant to price a drawing for those.
